Extremist terrorism is a serious, long-term problem. Met community and religious leaders this morning to discuss the ISIS threat. We updated them on what has been happening, and they shared their views on what all of us can do to protect ourselves.

Grateful to the Mufti and Malay/Muslim groups who have worked hard to counter ISIS propaganda. The Religious Rehabilitation Group (RRG) has produced a brochure (http://on.fb.me/1CqZtwL) and online videos to point out the fallacies of the ISIS Islamic Caliphate, and explain why their brutal methods are against Islam.

Glad that others – the Singapore Buddhist Lodge, Taoist Federation of Singapore and the Bright Hill Temple – have also contributed towards helping Syrian refugees.

It will be tough to eradicate terrorism. But we will keep Singapore safe, if we work closely together.

<< Protecting our trust and harmony against extremists >>

The fight against terrorism by extremists must include winning hearts and minds. We need the community’s help to prevent radicalisation and rehabilitate those affected back into society. We also need community and religious leaders to keep the community together, if ever there are attacks, so that the trust between Singaporeans of different races and religions remains solidly intact.

PM Lee Hsien Loong, together with a few of us Ministers, met about 300 community and religious leaders yesterday to talk about this challenge. Many of these leaders recognised how the threat of terrorism can cause doubts and sow divisions among communities. And that each of us has to stay vigilant and do what is necessary to protect Singapore and Singaporeans. Community and religious leaders expressed support for what the SAF is doing together with other nations to stop the threat posed by ISIS. It was a fruitful session and I am heartened by the unity and support expressed at the meeting.    – Ng Eng Hen

Attended PM’s dialogue with our community and religious leaders earlier this morning regarding the conflicts in Syria and Iraq. While these conflicts may seem distant, our region is not immune to terrorist acts and violent extremist ideologies – our people, community leaders and government must stay vigilant and work together to safeguard Singapore and Singaporeans from such threats.

***************************************************************

Overheard :

  • 除暴安良,人人有责。
  • Thanks God, our PM and his team are always visionary, vigilant and proactive.
Singapore and Singaporeans are well taken of, at all times by them.
Let us not be complacent and do our necessary part too.
  • We must work together to preserve the hard fought harmony and social cohesion Singapore has achieved. This make us stand out not only in the region but the world.
  •  These words ” VIOLENT EXTREMEIST IDEALOGIST” are huge threats to all of us that embrace INCLUSIVE & PEACEFUL society through RESPECT for individual as a decent human being and UNITY as a citizen for our Nation.
  • Yes our PM is rite. We also must stop RACIST. Those Racist shld nt be in Spore. Those cannot tolerate with Funeral n wedding under voide deck shld also be out. As one unity Spore must always fight for our safety & secure our future. Those who also don’t want to learnt English shld take the English course as we sporean shld be united to converse ONE LANGUAGE that can be understand for all and keep our Mother Tongue among our family.

  • Dear PM, Sir. I attended the session yesterday and I’m appreciative of the effort thus far made by the government.

I believe that whatever the case is, our actions must always be based on right principles. And I believe that this is what the government has always been trying to do though at times it may be difficult.

Another factor of paramount importance to me is the issue of knowledge. The true knowledge. And in this instance we understand that all who have become victims or are vulnerable to become victims of misguided/deviant ideology are those who do not attend any formal religious classes.

When a person enters a dark room, he will not be able to see anything. But the moment it is lighted up, he will understand what is happening and what he should and should not do.

I therefore believe that the effort to convey the true message of Islam through a structured, systematic way should reach to as many Muslims as possible so that they may be saved from any misguided/deviant ideology.

  • It’s good. We are with you.
  • Mr PM LHL, thank you very much for your care and concern for Singapore and Singaporeans.
You looked very tired and having a flu. Please rest well and take great care.
  • Sir it is not at all tough to eradicate terrorism…we just need stable and strong government like Singapore.

  • Mr Prime Minister, its good to have you as our leader. As a citizen, we will always be positive and supportive.
  •  No matter how terrorism is personified, it is and maintains to be latently disastrous.
In this context, Mr Lee Hsien Loong as the Prime Minister, officially the political leader and head of the Singaporean government through this status and message of his has given evidence of not only inspiring leadership but exemplary statesmanship as well.
He has had the Singaporean people seriously realize of the enduring present but not yet active, developed or visible danger which could be a threat too to his city-state.
Aware of the fact that he and his government would not be able to face and overcome this problem on their own, he has motivated, encouraged his citizens and made rapprochement to face this challenge preventively nationwide at its earliest stage. Preventativity is far better than cure!
Well done, Mr Prime Minister! You really have learned a significant lesson from the latest polls where PAP did not gain the landslide win as had been the tradition before. Experience is the best teacher. Keep close in touch with the Singaporean people. They deserve interpersonal contact with the government. Together the Singaporeans stand, don’t they?

  •  ISIS is a very dangerous elements in the universe, so every countries should step up their security to combat this terrorism led by ISIS. Singapore is a small nation n we have to be more vigilant n prepared. Our PM Mr Lee HL is very concerned n he always initiate to conduct talks n discuss with all the religious leaders to have a common mindset to eradicate this ISIS practices in our country. So we are the citizens of Singapore should stand united with government to fight against this terrorism led by ISIS.
  • Dear PM Lee
Thank you that under your leadership, we are able to dwell in this peaceful nation.

  • Many Singaporeans (including me) are really thankful that we have capable government and leaders to lead and manage our country. I have never take it for granted of the security, peace and racial harmony that we have in Singapore.

Some of our people may feel that what is happening in other far away countries doesn’t affect us and feel that we should not get involve. It is definitely not the case. ISIS fighters came from many different countries and its ideology can be spread like a virus especially with internet and social media. Singapore is very small country and our people live very close to one another in a small city. If any terrorist successfully attack us in our homeland, the consequence will be very serious. We really cannot afford to wait for things to happen to us before we decide to do something. It can be too late.

Making a stand on the issue of ISIS and educating our people on this matter is definitely the right thing to do. Thank you Mr Lee and team. Salute to you for your dedication for our country and our people.

  • Which ever religion do we belong to, we all should stand against ISIS.

Julien Blanc blocked from entering Singapore

  Chan Chun Sing <-

November 26

Some of you have shared with me your concerns about Julien Blanc and his seminars in various countries to advise men on how to use violence against women when dating them. I share your concerns fully.

ICA has discussed with MSF. ICA will not allow Mr Blanc into Singapore, especially if he is here to hold seminars or events that propagate violence against women.
Violence against innocent people is unlawful and totally unacceptable. We cannot allow people to perpetuate such unlawful activities in our country.

Pick-up artist Julien Blanc blocked from entering Singapore

Self-proclaimed pick-up artist Julien Blanc will not be allowed to enter Singapore, “especially if he is here to hold seminars or events that propagate violence against women or to participate in other objectionable activities in Singapore”, said the ICA and MSF.

SINGAPORE: Mr Julien Blanc, a self-proclaimed pick-up artist who recently made headlines after his visa was revoked in Australia, will not be allowed into Singapore, announced the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) in a joint statement on Wednesday (Nov 26).

“Blanc has been involved in seminars in various countries that advised men to use highly abusive techniques when dating women,” said the ICA and MSF. “Violence against women or any persons is against Singapore law.”

“The ICA, in consultation with MSF, will not allow Mr Blanc into Singapore, especially if he is here to hold seminars or events that propagate violence against women or to participate in other objectionable activities in Singapore,” they added.

A Singaporean, Ms Charis Mah, had earlier started a petition asking that Julien Blanc and his group, the Real Social Dynamics, be kept out of Singapore. Ms Mah shared on the petition on Wednesday that the Ministry of Home Affairs had sent her a response on her petition. She wrote: “We took a stand and we did it! Thank you everybody!”

The petition reached more than 7,500 supporters by Nov 19, said Ms Mah in her online update.

According to a tour schedule, Blanc was supposed to visit Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul from late November to early December.

The move by Singapore follows a similar ban by Britain last week.

Reports have said Japan and South Korea are also unlikely to grant Blanc a visa if he visits the two countries.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Social and Family Development Minister Chan Chun Sing said some have shared their concerns about Mr Blanc and his seminars, advising men on how to use violence against against women when dating them.

“I share your concerns fully,” he said in the post. “Violence against innocent people is unlawful and totally unacceptable. We cannot allow people to perpetuate such unlawful activities in our country.”

Accountability and transparency needed from AHPETC: Desmond Lee

POSTED: 21 Nov 2014
Source Channel NewsAsia : Accountability and transparency needed from AHPETC: Desmond Lee

Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee said The Workers’ Party has not explained its “serious financial mismanagement”, and rising service and conservancy charges arrears.

SINGAPORE: The key issue in the poor performance of the Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council (AHPETC) is accountability and transparency, said Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee in a statement on Friday (Nov 21).

The Workers’ Party (WP) has not explained its “serious financial mismanagement”, and rising service and conservancy charges (S&CC) arrears, said Mr Lee. “Instead, we have seen a coordinated online campaign to distract the public, using falsehoods, half-truths and speculations, by friends, sympathisers and proxies of the WP. The aim is to confuse the public and distract them from the real issues.”

The WP-managed town council (TC) was the only one out of 16 banded “red” in corporate governance and S&CC arrears management in the Town Council Management Report released on Nov 4.

Subsequently, questions were raised in various online forums on the grants given to AHPETC, in comparison to other town councils run by the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). MND clarified on Thursday that the funding for town councils is based on the number of HDB flat units and flat types in an area.

The following is Mr Lee’s latest statement in full:

“AHPETC has yet to explain its serious financial mismanagement, and the S&CC arrears.  Instead, we have seen a coordinated online campaign to distract the public, using falsehoods, half-truths and speculations, by friends, sympathisers and proxies of the Workers’ Party (WP).  The aim is to confuse the public and distract them from the real issues.  MND has addressed these untruths.  This is what the WP often does when caught under the spotlight – raise a flurry of red herrings in the hope that people forget that they have not come clean.

The key issue is accountability and transparency.

By its own admission, the AHPETC has seen 29.4 per cent of its residents owing S&CC for three months or more.  That was in Apr 2013, a sudden spike beyond the already high arrears rates consistently reported in the TC’s previous submissions

How did this happen?  And what is the current arrears rate?

Only the TC knows the answer, but it refuses to answer. Why? Ms Sylvia Lim and Mr Pritam Singh have said they will give answers in “due course”.  Why the delay and obfuscation?

Since May 2013, AHPETC has stopped submitting its S&CC arrears data to MND.  It now also refuses to tell the public the truth.  Ms Sylvia Lim has given the excuse that this is because they are busy with the AGO Audit.  How can this be the reason, when the TC stopped providing the data 10 months before the AGO Audit even started?  And surely the TC must know the arrears position, whether or not an Audit is in progress?

There are other concerns.  AHPETC received the same S&CC grants in FY12 that it got before the 2011 General Election.  Yet, in FY10 the TC ran an operating surplus of $3.3m, but in FY12 it ran a deficit of $734,000.  Why did this happen?  Is the S&CC from Aljunied GRC residents being used to cover the deficit in Hougang TC?  (In FY10, Hougang TC had an operating deficit of $92,000.)  If so, surely residents of Aljunied GRC are entitled to know?

Just as the TC had not answered questions raised by their own Auditors, Foo Kon Tan Grant Thornton, it has also not answered questions from the public about the state of its finances today.”

Nick Shen: I will like to dedicate this special award to my country, Singapore.

I will like to dedicate this special award to my country, Singapore. Thank you Hui Jie, Jerry, Dainial, Andrea, Shan and Harry! • Congrats Weijun,so proud of U
  • 实至名归,吾国之光。
  • 有你们,国人也沾上光彩 !
  • 恭喜炜峻,你的努力得到回报了!再接再励
  • Good Job but don’t stop there remember to make a difference in other ppl’s life

How come WP cannot do whatever they want with the ward they have won ? So unfair !

Overheard  :
This is so unfair ! How come WP cannot do whatever they want with the ward they have won ? WP should be allowed to write their own law for their ward .

What is the point of WP standing for election , win and yet cannot run it as they please ?

  • Yeah, I agree, WP should be allowed to do whatever they want once they win the election, like taking over the public funds as their own, give out contracts to their own companies, and even selling residents as slave labours.
  • It’s simple as ABC, you break the rule, after several yellow cards you still insist on not abiding, you get red card. What’s there to argue? Still want to push blame?
  • Shame to WP for flouting the law and not respecting the regulations. How can such a party want to be the government. That will be a disgrace to Singapore.
  • They broke the law and they expressed disappointment at the court verdict! But when shopkeepers went to the town council office to speak to them regarding the frequent trade fairs (no law breaking here), they called the police!
  • Irresponsible organisers of illegal trade fairs like AHPETC not only exposes themselves to legal action, they expose their tenant stallholders to legal action too.
  • Absolute DISGRACE and irresponsible WP! How dare they want to GO ABOVE THE LAW and hope to win respect from Singaporeans. WE NO STUPIDS!
  • see me law. they no law 1 wat. just keep playing victim card can liao
  • Perhaps they should be exempted from all Acts or Regulations, given their opposition status!
  • 国有国法,家有家规,但后港一带好象是个山寨,有自己的山寨王和帮规。又能奈何?

Any fair minded person should not support incompetent and self-serving opposition parties

Overheard 1 :

NEVER LIKE ‘PLAYING’ POLITICS, unless when the country is ‘self-destruct’ by incompetent and self-serving opposition parties and their narrow-minded followers.

This I have to say: DON’T throw-the-baby-out-with-the-bathwater

We want credible political parties to make Singapore successful but not with current WP or oppositions. All their incompetencies thus far add to zilch! Objectively looking at them, any fair minded person should not support them.

It’s very easy to tear down Singapore. To rebuild it, don’t try – after tearing it down. You don’t know where we came from. To live through POOR Singapore, only then you can appreciate what we have.

Yes, we are definitely not a perfect country and will never will. We must support credible parties – be it ruling or upcoming parties.

Any thing less, we must be careful and safeguard what we already have – lest we throw-the-baby-out-with-the-bathwater.

If we have credible party, sure go and support. But to support incompetent party just to spike the ruling one, what’s the point?

To satisfy your own self-interest and bring down Singapore?

Unless this is your intention. Let’s not play with the future of our small red-dot Singapore. To fail and hope to rise up again, don’t bet on it.

***********************************************
Overheard 2 :

Being incompetent is one thing. If they are willing to take responsibility & learn, maybe can still give chance. The worse is now they dun even take responsibilty & has zero integrity..all they do with all the misdeeds are to push the blame. Completely unacceptable.
