SINGAPORE: National shooter Martina Lindsay Veloso on Tuesday (Aug 19) fired her way to a silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games 2014, earning Singapore’s first medal in the process.

The 14-year-old finished second with a score of 207.2, behind Switzerland’s Sarah Hornung, who shot 207.8. Germany’s Julia Budde came in third with a score of 186.3.

“I’m very happy and thrilled with my performance. I gave my best, so I’m really thrilled with this. All my hard work has definitely paid off, and I couldn’t have done this without all my supporters back home – the SNOC, the SSA, the Sports School and my family and friends,” she said after her win.

On being so close to clinching gold, Veloso said that “it does not matter” and Switzerland’s Hornung “deserved it”. “I’m just glad that I did my best,” she reiterated.

Celebrating her result, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth said on Twitter: “#OurTeamSG has won Singapore’s 1st medal at the @youtholympics! Congratulations to Martina!”

Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin added on Twitter: “Silver! #OurTeamSG #Singapore”

Mr Tan later added that Veloso is “quite an exceptional talent”, since she is still 14 yet narrowly missed out on a medal at the Commonwealth Games recently. She also won the World Championship earlier this year, he said.

On her win, he said: “The key thing really is to inspire other Singaporeans to take up shooting. Shooting is one of those games where physiologically we are not disadvantaged in, and I would hope that this sport, and other sports, will grow.”

He also said he hoped there will be more medals to come at the Games. “But the important thing is that a number of athletes have done well, they have done their personal best. I think that’s something we are always looking out for,” Mr Tan added.
