They are not children as defined by UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

by Bryan T

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) defines a child as any human being under the age of eighteen, UNLESS the “age of majority is attained earlier under a state’s own domestic legislation”.

In other words, countries can stipulate their own ‘maturity’ age for their citizens. For example, under Singapore’s Children and Young Persons Act (CYPA), legal protection is provided for “children below the age of 14 years, as well as for young persons aged 14 and below 16 years”.

The SPF’s statement had already stipulated that those accused of vandalism were 17 years old. Its FB post even included a photograph.

Remy Choo, a founder of TOC and a lawyer, is apparently not clear of the CRC clause, or aware of the SPF statement.

If so, he should not be making frivolous FB posts like a typical rabid netizen (to incite the mindless ones).

Overheard :
” I suggest that TOC must have thoroughly reconciled the UN CRC before publishing this post. May I suggest TOC review it again before further foolishness & misinformation are perpetuated.
In addition, suggest it is only proper for statement of correction from TOC for the sake of its credibility.”

Overheard :

@Remi Choo has come out with a PPS (~I’ve been informed that the police have issued a statement that the boys involved are 17, so the CYPA issue isn’t in play.~) admitting quietly. Here is a lawyer who does to know the rule books. Singapore is doomed!
