Mischievous and Irresponsible for the SDP-Young Democrats (YD)’ article to mislead the public and cause undue anxiety to the residents in Pulau Ubin, says SLA, Singapore

Singapore Land Authority - Singapore, Singapore   Singapore Land Authority

The Singapore Democratic Party’s (SDP) website posted an article by the Young Democrats (YD) on their observations about Pulau Ubin’s development after a visit there. The article is misleading and contains a number of factual inaccuracies.

2.   In the article, the YD said that URA had approached a Mr Chua Bing Qing in 2009 to evict him but found out that the house he lived in belonged to his mother, so decided to charge him rent for the use of the land. This is untrue. URA did not approach the occupier, much less to evict or charge him rent as claimed by the YD.

3.   After the YD article appeared, SLA’s officers visited Mr Chua who said that he had not been approached by any agency about being evicted

This was confirmed by his brother, Mr Chua Peng Hong.

4.   In March this year, the HDB, acting on behalf of SLA, did conduct a census survey on 22 households in Pulau Ubin, including that of Mr Chua Bing Qing. It was noted that not all of these 22 households had claimed the resettlement benefits they were entitled to. The census survey sought to re-establish the eligibility of the households for the resettlement benefits and to ascertain whether the households intend to remain in Pulau Ubin or relocate.

If Mr Chua chooses to continue staying in Pulau Ubin, the TOL will provide a basis for his continued stay on the island. To help residents like Mr Chua, the TOL fees will be phased in over 5 years and kept affordable. Financial help will be provided to those who require further assistance.

5.   The YD also said that a “Madam Samiyah” at Kampong Chek Jawa was evicted from her house 15 years ago because the area was slated for land reclamation. It also suggested that it was through “Madam Samiyah’s” persistence that she was eventually paid $400,000 for the sale of her land. Our records show that there was never an owner by the name of “Madam Samiyah” whose land was affected by any land acquisition exercise.

6.   Yet another resident, Mr Lim Cho Tee, was mentioned by the YD for receiving numerous notices posted on his door from the SLA, demanding rent payment. This is again untrue. The Lim family has been occupying the Pulau Ubin premises since 1969 and has been paying monthly TOL promptly through Giro, with no need for SLA to “demand” for rent payment whatsoever

Mr Lim showed SLA officers a stack of letters, including those from SLA, hand delivered to him by the postman, which he pinned up on an external wall

This was confirmed by Mr Lim when SLA’s officers met him after the YD article appeared

Mr Lim Cho Tee and his wife had never defaulted in paying the TOL

Mr Lim said that the “notices” referred to by YD were TOL renewal notices which were mailed to him. He would, as a matter of habit, pin them on the wall

7.   Various media reports between 12-21 Apr 2013 carried the Government’s clarification that there are no plans to evict the households currently residing on Pulau Ubin. We have stated that the planning intention is to keep Pulau Ubin in its rustic state for as long as possible and serve as an outdoor playground for Singaporeans.

It is mischievous and irresponsible for the article (http://yoursdp.org/news/2013-07-31-5666) to mislead the public and cause undue anxiety to the residents in Pulau Ubin.

What is  DRUMS :

Distortions, Rumours,  Untruths, Misinformatiion, Smears

Total Defense:

“In a tense and volatile situation, DRUMS can spread very far and wide and even cause confusion and chaos.

Those who would do us harm will purposely start DRUMS to weaken our resolve and cause disunity.

We have to learn how to respond to DRUMS, both as a Government and the people.

The authorities must have a quick response plan.

At the same time, the people themselves must be more discerning about the information that they read on the Internet.

Singaporeans themselves can respond or counter and stop the spread of DRUMS.”
