NTUC First Campus to cover all medical expenses of abused boy

SINGAPORE – NTUC First Campus will cover all the medical expenses of the 3-year-old boy who was injured after his 51-year-old childcare teacher allegedly dragged him across the floor and pushed him onto the ground, causing him to fracture his shin.

In his personal statement at a press conference on Sunday, chief executive Mr Chan Tee Seng said: “I watched the video last night and was very disturbed and saddened. The teacher’s conduct was totally unacceptable.”

The incident was caught on closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), with the footage showing the teacher slamming a child repeatedly onto the ground at a Toa Payoh childcare centre, My First Skool, which is run by NTUC First Campus.

The teacher was arrested by the police on Sunday. Investigations are ongoing.

On Friday morning, 5 July, a child at My First Skool at Toa Payoh Blk 192 sustained an injury to his leg. It was caused by mishandling by his teacher. The parents were informed of the injury at about 11.40am. The child was brought to the clinic and subsequently the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital by the teacher and centre principal. The mother brought the child home that afternoon.

On Saturday, 6 July, the parents made a police report. They viewed the CCTV video that afternoon and parts of the video have been put online. There has since been press coverage and much discussion online.

I watched the video last night and was very disturbed and saddened. The teacher’s conduct was totally unacceptable and my heart goes out to the child and his parents. Whatever the circumstances, such behaviour cannot be condoned. I am truly sorry that this had happened.

We had placed the teacher on immediate suspension. The due process is underway and we will not hesitate to take the appropriate action for wrongdoings. I will personally see to a swift and fair conclusion to the investigation.

Child care incident

Dear friends,
Many of you have sent me video clips, smses, Facebook messages etc about the incident that occurred at a child care centre. Needless to say, I was horrified too and very concerned as a very young and defenceless child was involved but I ask you to be patient as the Ministry of Social and Family Development takes this incident very seriously and is investigating.

Above all, please do not judge and view all child care teachers negatively as many joined the profession not just because it is a job for them but because of their love for children, and we do not want to dampen their spirit and weaken their resolve.
Thank you.

We take a very serious view of this incident as the safety of our children is our paramount concern.

We are doing a thorough investigation. This will include the training of the centre’s staff, their supervision and incident management procedures.

There are important lessons for all. It reminds all of us the heavy responsibility entrusted to every childcare teacher.

  1. Parents says:

What is the current process of NTUC First Campus of investigating an incidence happened at the childcare? If medical treatment is sought at hospital A&E or the child is admtted to hospital due to injury after an incidence, will school view CCTV to conduct an investigation without a police case filed?

  2. Hi Parents, for your queries, it will be good if you could contact them directly , thanks and cheers
