When a wet market on Hougang Avenue3 was torn down five years ago, it struck a sour note among residents and even became a talking point during last year’s general election.

Now, the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) man in Hougang, Mr Desmond Choo, has pledged to lobby hard for a new market, as part of a series of initiatives he has been rolling out even as the ground heats up for a by-election.

Mr Choo, 34, who was fielded last year but lost to Workers’ Party (WP) candidate Yaw Shin Leong, is tipped to contest again. The Hougang seat has been vacant since Mr Yaw was sacked by his party in February.

However, Mr Choo, the grassroots adviser for the ward, maintains that his plans are not electioneering tactics, but long-term schemes that will be carried out ‘with or without the by-election’.
